Are you ready to leverage your language skills to join the growing language services profession?

Our MA program prepares students to become highly skilled language professionals equipped to thrive in today’s multilingual and technology-driven world. Combining academic rigor, professional training, and technological innovation, the program offers students a comprehensive foundation in translation, interpreting, intercultural communication, and language technologies.

The program brings together faculty expertise in translation and interpreting studies, professional practice, and both well-established and emerging computer-based and AI technologies. Students develop expertise not only in the deeply human dimensions of language mediation, cultural interpretation, and intercultural communication, but also in the practical use and critical understanding of technology-driven workflows.

Our students work with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) platforms, computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools, localization software, terminology management systems (TMS), neural machine translation (NMT), and generative AI. These technologies are reshaping professional practice, and it is essential for students to develop a critical and ethically informed approach to their use.

Located at a leading public research university, the program offers students access to a diverse international academic community and extensive resources in support of academic and professional growth. Through a curriculum that bridges human communication and technological innovation, the Program in Translation and Interpreting Studies at Illinois prepares graduates to lead the future of multilingual communication in an interconnected world.
